Jenny and the Mexicats – ENG

Jenny And The Mexicats

Flamenco meets Cumbia meets Rockabilly.

Jenny And The Mexicats were formed in Madrid in 2008, where British singer and trumpeter Jenny Ball met Spanish percussionist David González Bernardos and the Mexican brothers Pantera (guitar) and Icho (double bass) – who had previously moved to Spain from Mexico City with their own punk band. The band’s name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the colloquial term for Madrileños (Gatos, or “cats”) and also alludes to the Mexican heritage of two of the musicians. Soon after forming, the band moved to Mexico, where they worked their way up from small stages to the country’s largest concert halls and festivals.

Musically, Jenny And The Mexicats blend jazzy elements, rockabilly, flamenco, reggae, country, and cumbia into a distinctive blend that moves effortlessly between genres – one moment on the Plaza de Garibaldi in Mexico City, the next in an Andalusian flamenco club, only to unexpectedly end up on a beach in Jamaica. With “Open Sea/Mar Abierto”, the band released its first album in Germany, followed by its first club tour in the country; in the fall of 2019, the band returned for the third time with the album “Fiesta Ancestral”.

“Fiesta Ancestral” blended traditional tracks like “La Cumbia del Vino” and the Selena cover “Si una Vez” with new influences – from Prince-esque grooves in “Sonido De Tu Voz” to collaborations with Spain’s alternative rock giants Vetusta Morla (“El Télon”) and singer-songwriter El Kanka (“Bailando con las Farolas”). To mark the band’s tenth anniversary, they also released the retrospective album “10 Spins Around the Sun”, featuring songs from three studio albums as well as singles previously released only digitally – including the Mexicats’ version of the Mexican folk song “La Bruja.”
