Vetusta Morla – ENG

Vetusta Morla

Spain’s leading alternative rock band – hailed as the new Héroes del Silencio.

Vetusta Morla were formed in 1998 in Tres Cantos, near Madrid, when a group of school friends at the Instituto José Luis Sampedro decided to form a band for a school event. They owe their name to Morla, the ancient giant tortoise from Michael Ende’s children’s book ‘The Neverending Story’ – ‘vetusta’ means ‘ancient’ or ‘venerable’ in Spanish. Since their acclaimed debut album ‘Un día en el mundo’ (2008) on their own label, Pequeño Salto Mortal, the six-piece band led by singer Pucho has been regarded as one of the most influential voices in Spanish indie rock.

With their third studio album “La Deriva”, Vetusta Morla have definitively established themselves as arguably Spain’s leading and most successful alternative rock band at present: the accompanying tour filled the country’s largest concert venues – including the Madrid Sportpalast three times, each time with 15,000 fans – and took the band to the stages of the biggest festivals. Their rock has an international sound, yet remains recognisably ‘Spanish’ – not only through the lyrics, but also through the multi-layered rhythms and the distinctive atmosphere of their music.

Following an initial short tour of Germany in autumn 2014, the band’s very first release in Germany – the ‘German Edition’ of ‘La Deriva’ – was released in November 2015 on GMO – The Label. The album features two exclusive tracks, previously unreleased on CD, which bring the ‘La Deriva’ creative cycle to a close for the band; the five accompanying concerts in Germany also marked the conclusion of the entire ‘La Deriva’ tour. In the years that followed, further albums – ‘Mismo sitio, distinto lugar’ (2017), ‘Cable a tierra’ (2021) and ‘Figurantes’ (2024) – were released, cementing the band’s reputation as Spain’s number one rock band.
