Wake Up People! Sack are back!
Sack from Dublin established themselves as a fixture on the Irish indie rock scene as early as the 1990s. Their debut album ‘You Are What You Eat’ was released in 1993 on the British indie label Lemon Records – the single ‘Colorado Springs’ from the album promptly made it onto Morrissey’s hand-picked NME compilation ‘Songs to Save Your Life’. With their follow-up album ‘Butterfly Effect’ (1997), produced by Paul Tipler and Jacknife Lee, the band further cemented their reputation: Morrissey himself took Sack on his ‘Oye Esteban’ world tour in 1999, which took them to Germany for six concerts, amongst other venues.
In 2001, a third album, “Adventura Majestica”, was released on the band’s own label, Jetset Junta – after which a serious road accident forced the band to take a break lasting almost twenty years. It wasn’t until 2021 that Sack made a comeback with the single “What A Way To Live”, which was named “Single of the Year” by Irish radio presenter Tom Dunne; this was followed in 2022 by an anniversary edition of “Butterfly Effect” on vinyl. With their latest album ‘Wake Up People!’ (2024) – recorded with new members Gavin Fox (ex-Idlewild) and Tony Barrett alongside founding members such as singer Martin McCann – the band achieved what the Irish Times hailed as the best comeback album by a band of their generation.
The accident itself is explored musically in the song “I Fell Through A Crack” and visually in the accompanying video. The tracks were remastered especially for the double A-side single “Unmade Bed Of A Man” / “As One” by two-time Grammy winner Guy Massey (whose credits include The Beatles Remasters, Oasis and Spiritualized). Away from music, frontman Martin McCann is actively involved in the LGBTQ community and has performed at events such as Dublin Pride – ensuring that Sack remain a defining force, both musically and socially, far beyond the borders of Ireland.

Reviews & Press:
„Fresh, direct and honest.“
„The new Sack album is quite likely the best 'comeback' album (as it were) of any Irish band of their generation. Why? It sounds as 'right now' as any indie rock act I can think of. Guys in their 50's not reliving their past but surging ahead.“
„I've a pain in my face from smiling after listening to the new Sack album on repeat today. It's just so damn good!“
„ALBUM OF THE WEEK - Martin has one of the all time, most beautiful of voices.“
„At every turn the arrangements are inventive, Brereton & McCann's lyrics are evocative and sharp and the melodies sear into the brain. The wham-bam-glam cover is this year's best too.“
„One of my songs of the year.“
„ALBUM OF THE WEEK - The dazzling new album from Irish music legends Sack“
„ALBUM OF THE WEEK“
„An uncanny ability to pen an ear worm of a melody have conspired in a fantastic new addition to the canon of excellent Irish music in 2024.“
„The rousing Wake Up People! is a fresh, vibrant collection of songs, bursting with vim and vigour.“
„The sound is unmistakeably Sack, full of snappy Indie hooks, basslines and beats and Martin McCanns vocals are just as rich as when they burst on to the scene in the mid 90's.“
