On “Jealousy”, Sofia Marcella sings her biting, bitter lyrics over delicately arranged upbeat pop. The song’s subject’s jealousy may have gnawed its way right to the bone – but it simply cannot let go. Following her debut single, the gentle piano ballad with string interludes ‘Close to Forever’, her new single now takes a clearer turn towards modern singer-songwriter pop.

The singer-songwriter is studying music business and songwriting at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music – one of those highly selective and prestigious degree programmes that has produced, amongst others, artists and songwriters such as Maggie Rogers, Lauv, FLETCHER, A Great Big World and Emily Warren.
Having grown up in Northern New Jersey, with Italian and Cuban roots, Sofia Marcella has been writing her own songs since she was eight. Musically, her style ranges from pop to country, soul and soft rock, inspired by artists including Fleetwood Mac, Adele, Raye, Aretha Franklin and Etta James – and her greatest idol Whitney Houston.
Long before her first single was released, music industry heavyweight John Hanti had already taken notice of the young artist’s talent. Hanti has been active in the music industry since the 1980s; he is the founder of SST Studios & Rentals in New Jersey and, over the course of his career, has worked with artists including Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, the Rolling Stones, Bruno Mars, Camila Cabello, Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez – and is currently working with Jay-Z, amongst others. As her manager, producer and mentor, he supports the young artist every step of the way in her career.
This autumn, Sofia is moving to Spain for a semester abroad at NYU Madrid. There, she will study Spanish, art history, literature and politics, whilst also immersing herself in the local music scene.
