Mathias Schaffhäuser

Producer, singer, and sound traveler—blending techno and art-pop for over 30 years.

Mathias Schaffhäuser has been a fixture in the techno, house, and minimal scenes since 1994 – first as the frontman of the band Sally Davis Junior, then with his own productions on Force Inc. and Plus 8. He became best known for his techno version of the pop classic “Hey Little Girl”, which became a club hit and was featured on Sven Väth’s compilation series, among others. In 1997, he founded his own label, WARE, in Cologne, which has since released over 100 titles.

With his project FANATICO X, a collaboration with Jorge Socarrás, Schaffhäuser deliberately steps away from the dance floor: The third album “Beneath Your Feet” (new on GMO – The Label) traverses music history both stylistically and chronologically – from a haunting reinterpretation of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” to poems by Nietzsche and Lorca serving as song templates. Former Indoor Life musician Bob Hoffnar is also back on board, playing pedal steel guitar.

At the same time, Schaffhäuser continues – with his tenth solo album Singing About It” – a evolution that was already set in motion by the first two FANATICO-X albums: moving away from a purely club-oriented focus and toward vocals. The result falls somewhere between art pop and indie pop, but also flashes with blues and prog-rock influences – carried by a voice that has already been compared to David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, and Scott Walker.

"“Cover Me,” originally from the album “Singing About It,” emerged from a live improvisation and is featured on the EP with four remixes. Among them are Cecil, who gives the song an acoustic twist, and Pawas, who takes it deeper into electronica/deep house territory—complemented by Schaffhäuser’s own club mix, which further sharpens the track featuring Cecil & Pawas for the dance floor.

Mathias Schaffhäuser’s tenth solo album is titled “Singing About It,” and the title says it all—there’s singing here.
