Jenny and The Mexicats

Jenny and The Mexicats

The story of the Mexican-British-Spanish band Jenny and The Mexicats began in the hot summer of 2008 in Madrid (Spain). La Roja, Spain’s national football team, was on his way to win the UEFA European Championship. Jenny was around—and she had already been playing as a singer and trumpeter in her country for some years—when she decided to accept the invitation of the bassman Icho to join the band. He had already contacted his old Mexican fellow Pantera, an exceptional flamenco-rockabilly guitarist, with whom Icho had played in a punk band in Mexico City. And in turn, Pantera introduced David, a great percussionist with the Cajon among other marvelous things, to the Mexicats. They jammed and rehearsed together and they soon came to the conclusion that they wanted to continue playing as a band.

That is how the little adventure of the British girl began in search of new sounds to record in Spanish format. In the meantime, they also decided to give the band another name “Jenny & The Mexicats”. In 2011 both their first, self-titled album and their own record label “Mexicat Records” were presented in Madrid. One year later followed the relocation of the band to Mexico City. Their European success had not passed completely unnoticed there. Hits like Verde Más Allá reached quickly a Gold status in Mexico. Their second album, Ome was published in 2014 and contained singles like Labios, which also appeared in the Soundtrack of the Mexican film Amor de mis amores by Manolo Caro. This album also included a combination of new and old material, always with the singular amazing rhythms of the Mexicats,

They published their third studio album, Open Sea/ Mar Abierto in 2017 and they started touring through Europe as well. The album was published in Europe by the record label GMO – The Label.

On the occasion of their tenth anniversary appeared in 2018 an album compilation 10 Spins Around The Sun. Not only did the album include songs from their first three records, but also singles that had only been released on digital platforms until then.

Their latest album Fiesta Ancestral offers an expansion of the so far Mexicat sound, which also relies on the collaboration with other friends. The album title alludes to the link between traditional and modern elements. On the “traditional” side are songs like “La Cumbia del Vino” and the cover of Mexican-American singer Selena “Si una vez.” The new influences can be spotted on tracks like “Sonido de tu voz” or “La Oportunidad”

Their last three records are available in GMO – The Label Shop and Amazon and also on all digital platforms (Youtube, Amazon, Spotify, Deezer & Apple Music).
