According to the article, there is a close connection between mental disorders (that can also turn into physical diseases) and music therapy, which is said to serve as a constructive method to ease these pains. As a matter of fact, it is widely known that music therapy has been practiced in India for clinical purposes from time immemorial. When speaking of mental disorders, some of us may immediately come up with insomnia, also known sleeplessness, which affects one in seven adults and, as mentioned before, has been often treated in India with music therapy.
Several experiments and studies carried out throughout the years have confirmed that Carnatic music (classical music from Southern India) is very helpful when dealing with sleep disorders and experts have no doubt that this music is “best suited” to heal the anguish. Perhaps one of the most effective and significant styles within this music is the Raga Neelambari (meaning a musical scale and a specific way of playing notes). Neelambari music was also introduced in a “Music Therapy Course” launched fifteen years ago at a hospital in India to help participants sleep better. Experts also underline that Hindustani music (classical music from Northern India) is normally used to reduce pain produced by headaches.
But the properties of this type of music go beyond and can also be useful during these ambiguous and uncertain times of coronavirus. The renowned maestro Shashank Subramanyam pointed out that meditation and music therapy can also help alleviate corona distress. In his latest album, recorded along with the renowned pianist Mike Herting, he explained, there is also the idea of getting rid of the corona anxiety while playing this music. As he said, meditation for 30 minutes as a routine creates a unique feeling in everyone who practices and listens.
